Upper Arm Lift for Firm and Toned Arms

Firm, toned upper arms contribute to a youthful and confident appearance. Loss of skin elasticity, aging, or major weight loss can cause excess skin on the upper arms—often referred to as bat wings. This can be aesthetically distressing, especially when moving or wearing sleeveless clothing.
An upper arm lift (brachioplasty) is an effective surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin, tighten the upper arms, and restore smooth, natural contours.

Who Is a Good Candidate for an Upper Arm Lift?

An upper arm lift may be recommended if you experience:

  • Excess sagging skin on the upper arms

  • Reduced skin elasticity

  • Skin laxity after significant weight loss

  • Persistent dissatisfaction with arm appearance despite exercise and a healthy lifestyle

Exercise alone cannot tighten loose skin. Brachioplasty offers a long-lasting solution for visibly firmer and more defined upper arms.

  • Medical evaluation by your general practitioner or internist to assess your overall state of health.

  • Discontinuation of blood-thinning medications such as Aspirin®, Thomapyrin®, or Thrombo ASS® at least one week before surgery and for one week after the procedure, provided this is medically appropriate and approved by your physician.

  • Reduction of nicotine and alcohol consumption: To support proper wound healing and achieve the best possible surgical outcome, patients are advised to significantly reduce or ideally refrain from smoking and alcohol intake prior to surgery.

  • The upper arm lift is performed under general anesthesia and can be combined with an overnight hospital stay upon request to ensure optimal medical care.

  • The duration of surgery is approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the surgical technique used and the patient’s individual anatomical characteristics.

  • Depending on the extent of excess skin, different approaches may be required:
In milder cases, a minimal incision in the axillary (underarm) area combined with liposuction of the upper arms may be sufficient. In more pronounced cases, a more extensive incision along the inner upper arm may be necessary to achieve a harmonious and long-lasting result.

  • At the end of the procedure, a custom-fitted compression garment is applied. This supports the healing process, reduces swelling, and contributes significantly to an optimal surgical outcome.

  • Wear the compression garment continuously (24 hours a day) for 6 weeks to optimally support the healing process.

  • Avoid sports and strenuous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks to protect the surgical result.

  • Refrain from heavy lifting or physically demanding upper-body activities for at least 4 weeks.

  • Avoid sauna and tanning beds (solarium) for 6 to 8 weeks, as heat can increase swelling and negatively affect scar healing.

  • If liposuction of the upper arms was performed: Gently massage the treated areas several times daily using a nourishing oil or body lotion. This promotes circulation, supports skin regeneration, and helps achieve a smooth, even result.

As with any surgical procedure, upper arm lift surgery may involve certain side effects and risks. Overall, however, these complications are rare.

  • Rarely, postoperative bleeding, bruising (hematomas), or infections may occur.

  • Temporary tenderness or sensory changes in the treated area are possible but usually resolve on their own within the first few weeks.

  • Occasional lymphatic swelling may occur, particularly after more extensive procedures. In most cases, this can be effectively reduced through targeted lymphatic drainage therapy.

Careful postoperative care and adherence to your surgeon’s instructions play a crucial role in minimizing risks and supporting an optimal healing process.

Who is a good candidate for an upper arm lift?

An upper arm lift is suitable for individuals with sagging skin on the upper arms, for example after significant weight loss or due to age-related loss of skin elasticity.

Is the upper arm lift performed under general anesthesia?

Yes, the procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and can be combined with an overnight hospital stay if desired.

How long does the surgery take?

Depending on the technique used and individual findings, the procedure takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours.

Will there be visible scars?

Incisions are placed as discreetly as possible. Over time, scars usually fade significantly.

Are the results permanent?

With a stable body weight and a healthy lifestyle, the results are generally long-lasting.

When can I return to social activities?

Most patients are socially presentable again after approximately 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the individual healing process.

How long do I need to wear the compression garment?

A compression garment should be worn for approximately 6 weeks, ideally 24 hours a day, to support healing and optimize results.
