Liposuction

For an Aesthetically Pleasing Appearance

For many men and women, liposuction is the only way to get rid of excess and unsightly fatty tissue. Liposuction can also help with lipoedema, which is usually caused by a hereditary increase in fat cells. As a rule, however, this treatment is a purely aesthetic procedure. In the following sections you will find the most important information about liposuction.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Liposuction?

If exercise and a change in diet do not lead to the desired result, many patients decide to lose fat cells by means of liposuction. This affects so many men and women every year that liposuction is the most frequently performed cosmetic operation in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery after breast surgery.

Liposuction usually affects the following body parts:

  • abdomen

  • hips

  • thighs

  • lower legs

  • upper arms

  • chin

  • At the clinic, patients are put under twilight sleep or general anaesthesia by the anaesthetist for the duration of the procedure (day-clinic admission).

  • How long the operation takes depends on the number of body regions treated and the extent of the fat deposits (rough guide: one hour per region of the body).

  • Compression garments, which have been precisely fitted in advance, are put on the treated areas right after the procedure.

  • wear compression garment 24 hours a day for 4 - 6 weeks

  • no sports for 4 - 6 weeks

  • no sauna or solarium for 6 - 8 weeks

  • recommended skin care for the best possible result: treat the operated body region with oil/body lotion several times a day

  • In rare cases, liposuction can lead to secondary haemorrhaging, bruising or infections. Initial slight pain (sensitivity to touch) is completely normal and usually subsides in the first few weeks.

  • Does fatty tissue grow back after liposuction?

No. One positive fact about liposuction is that fatty tissue removed by the surgeon does not grow back. The likelihood of a large amount of fat reaccumulating in the affected area is low.

  • How does liposuction work?

Generally, the required incisions are only between 4 and 10 millimetres long. Through these small incisions, the fatty tissue is detached from the inside of the skin and extracted with suction cannulas (there are "normal" and vibrating ones). The patient hardly feels any pain thanks to the anaesthetic.
