Types of Hyperhidrosis

Primary and Secondary Hyperhidrosis

  • In secondary hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating is caused by an underlying medical condition or may be triggered by the use of certain medications, such as antibiotics or antidepressants.
In contrast, primary hyperhidrosis occurs without an identifiable underlying physical illness.

Localized and Generalized Hyperhidrosis

  • Excessive sweating may occur only in specific areas of the body or affect the entire body. When sweating repeatedly occurs in the same areas, it is referred to as localized hyperhidrosis. If the entire body is affected, it is known as generalized hyperhidrosis.

  • Excessive sweating most commonly affects the underarms, hands, and feet. However, the back, forehead, and scalp may also be affected.

Causes of Hyperhidrosis

The causes of excessive sweating in case of hyperhidrosis may include:

  • Cancer

  • Hormonal disorders

  • Infections

  • Hyperthyroidism

  • Neurological conditions

  • Mental health conditions

  • Age-related hormonal changes (e.g. menopause)

  • Certain medications

  • Obesity (severe overweight)

  • Diabetes mellitus

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Hyperhidrosis Treatments

  • In Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis, botulinum toxin (also known as BTX) is gently injected into the affected skin areas using a very fine needle. Through precise placement, the sweat glands are temporarily inhibited, resulting in a significant reduction in sweat production.
The effect typically lasts 5 to 7 months.

  • Sweat gland suction curettage is a long-lasting treatment option in which the sweat glands located deep within the skin are carefully and gently removed. This is done using a special suction curette to loosen and extract the glands. The procedure is most commonly performed in the underarm (axillary) area.

  • Discontinue anticoagulant medications (e.g. Aspirin, Thomapyrin, or Thrombo ASS) at least one week before and one week after the procedure

  • Limit alcohol and nicotine consumption to support optimal healing

  • The treatment can be performed under local anesthesia and/or in a comfortable twilight sleep. If desired, the procedure may also be carried out under general anesthesia.

  • This minor surgical procedure typically takes no longer than one hour, depending on the treated body area and individual anatomy.

  • Immediately after the procedure, an absorbent pressure bandage is applied. This bandage can usually be removed at the time of discharge.

  • We recommend avoiding sports and strenuous physical activity for approximately two weeks.

  • Possible side effects include temporary swelling, redness, or mild pain in the treated areas. Serious complications are rare.

  • In very rare cases, bleeding, bruising, or infection may occur.

  • A temporary sensitivity to touch at the treated sites is relatively common but usually resolves within the first few weeks after the procedure.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis refers to excessive sweating that goes beyond normal levels and can occur independently of heat or physical activity.

How can I tell if I have hyperhidrosis?

Whether hyperhidrosis is present and how severe it is can be determined through a specialist examination by a dermatologist. A proper medical assessment helps identify an overactivity of the sweat glands and determine which treatment options are appropriate.

How does Botox treatment for excessive sweating work?

In Botox therapy, botulinum toxin is injected into the affected areas using a very fine needle. This selectively reduces sweat production. The effect usually lasts 5 – 7 months.

What is sweat gland suction curettage?

Sweat gland suction curettage is a long-lasting procedure in which overactive sweat glands are gently removed. It is most commonly performed in the underarm (axillary) area.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatments are generally well tolerated. Depending on the method, local anesthesia may be used to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible.

When will I see the first results?

With Botox treatment, results typically begin to appear after a few days. After suction curettage, improvement is usually noticeable after a short healing period.

Are the results permanent?

The effect of Botox is temporary, while sweat gland suction curettage can provide a long-lasting to permanent reduction in sweating.
