Types of Hyperhidrosis

There are two types of hyperhidrosis: primary and secondary.

In secondary hyperhidrosis, sweating is either the result of an underlying physical illness (see table of causes), or of certain medications such as antibiotics or antidepressants. In the case of primary hyperhidrosis, no underlying disease can be identified.

When incrased sweating occurs in specific parts of the body only it is called localised hyperhidrosis. Axillary, palmar or plantar hyperhidrosis (armpits, hands, feet) is particularly common. However, the back, forehead or scalp can also be affected.
In generalised hyperhidrosis the entire body is affected by the overactivity of the sweat glands.

Causes of Hyperhidrosis

The causes of excessive sweating in the case of hyperhidrosis include:

  • cancer

  • hormonal disorders

  • infections

  • hyperthyroidism

  • neurological diseases

  • mental illnesses

  • age-related physical changes (menopause)

  • certain medication

  • obesity (morbid overweight)

  • Diabetes mellitus

  • hypertension (high blood pressure)

Hyperhidrosis Treatments

  • In hyperhidrosis therapy with Botox, botulinum toxin is injected in the affected areas using a fine needle. The skilful placement of the substance blocks the sweat glands and prevents sweat secretion.
    Duration of effect: 5 - 7 months.

  • In the course of sweat gland suction curettage, the sweat glands located deep inside the skin are removed out using a suction curette.

  • discontinuation of anticoagulant medication, e.g., Aspirin, Thomapyrin or ThromboAss, at least one week before and one week after the operation

  • limitation of alcohol and nicotine

  • The treatment can be performed under local anaesthesia and/or in a comfortable twilight sleep (sedoanalgesia). If desired, the procedure can also be performed under general anaesthetic.

  • This minor operation usually takes no longer than an hour, depending on the body part and personal constitution.

  • Right after the procedure, an absorbent pressure bandage is applied, which can also be removed on discharge.

  • We recommend refraining from sport for 2 weeks.

  • In very rare cases, post-operative haemorrhaging, bruising or infections may occur. It is quite common for the treated areas to be sensitive to touch. This usually subsides within the first few weeks after the procedure.

  • How can I be sure that I suffer from hyperhidrosis?
An expert opinion from a dermatologist will show you whether and to what extent you have hyperhidrosis.

  • What are the benefits of hyperhidrosis therapy with botulinum toxin?
Treatment with botulinum toxin is very effective and patients are usually very satisfied with the results. The results are usually better than with other methods (antiperspirants, tap water iontophoresis, radiofrequency therapy, therapy with medication).
