There are many reasons for an eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). The most common include age-related wrinkles, drooping eyelids, bags or pouches beneath the eyes or even a restriction of the visual field.

UPPER vs. LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY

In the area of eyelid surgery, a distinction is made between lower eyelid lift and upper eyelid lift.

Lower eyelid lifts are usually performed in a 1- to 1.5-hour operation. Depending on the underlying cause for the procedure, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia, twilight sleep or, if desired, under general anaesthesia. 

Upper eyelid lifts generally take place on an outpatient basis with local anaesthesia and last about 1 hour. Here, too, our patients feel little of the procedure.

  • In the week before and the week after your procedure, you must cease taking anticoagulant medication such as Aspirin, Thomapyrin and Thrombo Ass.

  • Nicotin and alcohol consumption should also be limited in the week before the procedure.

  • In the case of upper eyelid lifts, excess skin and fat are removed and the sagging eye muscle is tightened respectively. The completely painless incision for the patient (local anaesthesia) is carried out in the already existing fold of the upper eyelid. This will make your eyes look more open, radiant, and rejuvenated.

  • In the case of lower eyelid lifts, fat deposits at the transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek region are removed or relocated. Excess skin is removed, and the sagging eye muscle tightened. Here, the also largely painless incision is made just below the eyelashes or inside the eyelid. A lower eyelid lift can work real wonders!

  • Change of plaster after 3 days

  • Suture removal after 7 – 14 days

  • Cold packs and resting the head in an elevated position work well against any kind of swelling

  • Lymphatic drainage speeds up the healing process

  • Sports and exercise possible after 2 weeks

  • Slight swelling and bruising are possible, particularly in the lower eyelid and cheek area. These side effects usually subside within the first two weeks after surgery.

  • In very rare cases, especially in the case of lower eyelid surgery, tear flow or eyelid closure may be impaired. However, these side effects usually disappear within a very short time.

  • Does health insurance cover the costs of a blepharoplasty?

In most cases, health insurance does not cover the costs of a blepharoplasty. This applies to both, public and private health insurance companies, who generally classify the procedure as a purely aesthetic or cosmetic eyelid correction.

  • What is the recovery time after blepharoplasty?

Eyelid surgery does not necessarily require people to take time off. Basically, you can return to work immediately after the operation if you do not engage in any strenuous physical activity. The other question is “social ability”. Most patients take a 7 – 14-day break.
